Developmental Specialist

Position/Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Child Development, Child Psychology, Early Childhood or related fields preferred. Candidates with a BA in these areas will also be considered.

  • Strong knowledge of Montessori theory and practice required.

  • Toddler/Primary Montessori credential preferred.

  • Will consider candidates with a BA or equivalent experience in early intervention, Child Development, Early Childhood
    Observation, documentation and qualitative note taking abilities.

  • Works well both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Experience working with children with special needs, including neurodivergent children.

  • Experience working with families of diverse racial, cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Knowledge and experience with curriculum development and curriculum adaptation for children with learning differences.

  • Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

  • Knowledge of sensory processing.

  • Strong understanding of early childhood mental health and development.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, oversee and record summaries of meetings with Primary and Toddler teaching teams.

  • Monitor and record Student Support Services meeting summaries for Toddler and Primary.

  • Record and monitor observation and intervention strategies for Toddler and Primary teachers.

  • Upon request of teachers and/or Director of Early Childhood, coordinate, participate in and record meetings of teachers and parents.

  • Maintain confidentiality of VMS students and families.

  • Conduct monthly parent education workshops.

  • Communicate respectfully and with cultural sensitivity.

  • Support child and family goal attainment in coordination with other agencies, as applicable.

  • Attend and participate in outside agency meetings (e.g., IEP meetings) as needed and/or upon request.

  • Conduct faculty in-service training about topics identified by teachers.

  • Attend weekly level meetings for Toddler and Primary.

  • Provide push-in support under the guidance of the Director of Early Childhood.

  • Foster relationships with intervention providers outside of VMS.

  • Maintain VMS Provider Referral List.

  • Coordinate full-staff Consortium twice a year.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
